Hello everyone!
I’m happy to announce that Lavalampe, the first Font Fan Club release, is now available for download. For those of you who may have missed what the Font Fan Club is about, here is a quick reminder. The FFC is a type design project that you can follow by subscribing to this newsletter. I, Tamara Pilz, practice and experiment with letterforms and share my process along the way. Each month you’ll receive the results in the form of a new and exclusive font in your inbox.
Meet Lavalampe! (German for lava lamp – because of course the English spelling is already taken)
This first release took me a little longer than I would have liked, but time management is the first lesson learned. The monthly deadline is there to get ideas processed and shared quickly and not to worry too much about perfection. With this first design, I went through all the expected emotions, from love and excitement to self-doubt and wanting to start over. I have now reached a point where my commitment to the timeframe overrides my desire to polish these curves just a little longer. I am very excited to officially kick off the club and am more than ready to work on something else. ;)
Lavalampe is an all-caps display font with a special design feature. Each symbol and letter is boxed at baseline and cap height, and all glyphs are connected. This allows you to set horizontally accentuated text boxes and play with leading to create interesting grid results. This typeface was originally intended to have two styles. Lampe, which you can download now, and Lava, an inverted version. With the time constraints I set myself, I could only realise one style, but what's Lampe without Lava... I may have to go back and finish it.
You can download all FFC fonts for free and use them for any private or non-commercial projects or student work. If you fall in love with a design and want to use it for monetised projects, you can support my work by buying a licence, starting at 5€.
BUT (there had to be a caveat, right?), each design will only be available for 30 days after its release and the download link will only be shared here, in the newsie. So you better hit the download button, because there is no guarantee that the designs will be available later ;)
You can download Lavalampe here, I hope you enjoy using it:
Until next time,
Tamara
Love it and I’m really hoping you will bring out the inverted style as well!
fine work, thank you ! and waiting for the second style :—)
